The over-consumption of sugar in America has become a grave problem. Thanks to soft drinks, candy, desserts, and sweetened fruit drinks, 25.8 million children and adults in the United States (8.3% of the population) have diabetes. Another not-so-fun fact: More than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) are obese.

This infographic by OnlineNursingPrograms.com notes the amount of sugar that Americans consume on average, what foods most Americans get their sugar from, and the related health problems that are likely to occur with excessive sugar consumption. So now you’re thinking okay, the logical solution to all of this is simply taking a break from all that sugary sweet stuff. One problem: according to brain scans, sugar is as addictive as cocaine.
