A First Look at Cherry Bombe Magazine, Celebrating Women and Food

Cherry Bombe, a new biannual magazine founded by Seersucker co-owner Kerry Diamond and designer Claudia Wu, brings some new perspective to food media.

Gorgeous indie-food magazines that double as coffee table books are all the rage these days. Just look at David Chang and Peter Meehan’s Lucky Peach, Brooklyn restaurateur Andrew Tarlow’s Diner Journal, the vegan quarterly Chickpea Magazine, and a whole host of others that are well-worth a look. At their best, they offer a refreshing departure from mainstream rags, focusing on stunning photo essays, interviews with the characters that fuel the food world behind the scenes, and other offbeat features.

The latest biannual magazine to enter the fray—Cherry Bombe, a collaboration between Kerry Diamond (co-owner of Brooklyn restaurants Seersucker and Nightingale 9) and Claudia Wu (of design firm Orphan and cult indie publication Me Magazine)—just showed up on our desk, and it’s a stunner with a clear agenda: to celebrate women in the culinary world. The two founders raised $42,000 on Kickstarter to launch their first issue, which hit newsstands May 10 (it retails for $18).

The cover of the one pound, 11 ounce magazine depicts smoking hot supermodel Karlie Kloss licking cookie dough from her finger. Without opening the cover, you know you’re in for something epic, but a look inside the 172-page magazine reveals an ode to the French 75 cocktail by Sophia Coppola (with a recipe from Bar Hemingway at the Ritz Paris); an interview with questions by April Bloomfield and answers by Bar Jules’ Jessica Boncutter; and an arresting photo essay titled “Where There’s Smoke,” depicting female pitmaster Helen Turner working amid the vapors of her Tennessee barbecue joint.

With mostly female subjects and contributors, Cherry Bombe is a large dose of girl power wrapped in an aesthetically pleasing foodie package. With a clear point of view and beautiful visuals, this is definitely one to keep on your radar.
