Though some 52 million photos are uploaded to Instagram each day, it feels like the vast majority of our time online is spent scrolling through images of gooey slices of pizza, leaning towers of barbecue, and elegantly arranged platters of sushi and sashimi. The restaurant industry is almost tailormade for the Instagram age, with customers eagerly whipping out their phones to document every course, cocktail, and coffee. And while visual representations have always been tantamount to a restaurant's success, in 2016, flattering lighting and candy-stuffed milkshakes can be the difference between an empty dining room and a viral sensation.

As 2016 comes to a close, Instagram has released a list of the most frequently photographed dining destinations in the U.S. Unsurprisingly, the 10 restaurants that made the cut are almost exclusively located around New York and Los Angeles, the country’s two most populous cities, and areas still seen as the lifeblood of dining culture in America.

Still, the list manages to touch on a little of everything, from old-school delis slinging pastrami on rye, to bougie Italian nightclubs serving decadent slices of chocolate. Here, via CNN, are the 10 most Instagrammed dining destination in the U.S. so far this year.
