Chipotle announced this morning that #carnitasgate, the pork shortage that affected one-third of the national chain’s locations, is finally coming to an end. Carnitas are back at 90% of the chain’s locations, and we know where you’re headed for lunch.
The shortage began in January of this year when the chain discovered that the farming practices of one of its main pork suppliers did not meet Chipotle’s ‘responsibly raised’ standards. When Chipotle cut off that supplier, it forced the company to take pork off the menu at approximately 600 of its over 1,800 chain locations. Chipotle estimated that the pork shortage reduced sales at existing locations by two percent, given that carnitas account for six or seven percent of entrees ordered.
The pork-ocalypse is almost over, though, and America is freaking the f*ck out. The chain says that carnitas will be back at 100% of its locations by the end of November.
The last states to get back carnitas will be Georgia, Ohio, North Carolina, and South Carolina. We feel sorry for you guys.
