Ever since Beyonce shocked the world by dropping her last album with no advanced warning, artists have made a sport out of releasing surprise albums and mixtapes. Drake is no stranger to this game, and last night he shut down the Internet by offering up the 17-track If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.
Like anything Drake puts out, it’s well worth playing on repeat for the next 72 hours or so. But the best part? The unexpected and hilariously silly Guy Fieri shoutout on the song “6 Man.”
Drake raps, “Fieri, I’m in the kitchen, I’m a magician,” over Daxz and Noah “40” Shebib’s sparse and 808s-heavy production. While Drizzy name-drops the Frosted Tipped One almost flippantly, the Internet—god bless it—clocked the enormity of the shoutout right away and quickly recalled Aubrey’s previous hangout with the Triple-D star, when it seemed like a fertile bromance was taking form.
But Mr. OVO’s Fieri reference wasn’t the only food rap found on album. Drake also laced several other tracks with mentions of Houston steakhouses and other slick culinary talk. Here are some of the more notable grub-related metaphors and similes.
“I treat V Live like it’s ’07 in Magic City”
“In the 6 cooking with the wriiiist motion”
“V Live, I order that Alfredo pasta then eat in the kitchen like I’m in the mafia”
“Still drinkin’ Henny, if it’s done, I’ll take the D’usse”
“Laced up, dripped up, sauced up”
[Guest PARTYNEXTDOOR] “I get her hot like Wasabi”
“She on some up at 9am already cookin’ in the kitchen sh*t”
“Yeah, she workin’ with the spatula, I know she love flippin’ sh*t”
“6 P.M. in New York”
“I cook the beef well done on the double with cheese / Special order for anybody that’s comin’ for me.”
Despite all this, the point below about the project’s artwork probably won all of the Drake jokes today.
Let’s hope Guy decides to show out during NBA All-Star Weekend for a cypher with Drizzy—we already know his freestyles are fire:
