Welcome to Blank on Blank: a fantastic PBS series that transforms lost interviews with cultural icons into animated short films.

This episode brings Jennifer Van Evra’s 2002 phone interview with The Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne to life. Coyne talks both about how music helped comfort him while his father was dying, and the near-death experience he had as a teenager during an armed robbery while working at Long John Silver’s.ljs

The power of music—and the theme of living with death—weaves through it all. Coyne says,

“Life is worth celebrating and worth living even though we’re all headed to the same hole at the end of the day…I’m pouring my guts out so they can feel like your guts at the same time.”

Fun fact: the filmmakers used illustrations from Wayne Coyne’s comic book throughout the film.
