Taco Bell Product Development Director Heather Mottershaw wasn’t looking for glory when she came up with the Waffle Taco.
She was just checking out Facebook. A friend of hers had posted a photo of a meal he was about to devour, which consisted of a breakfast-filled, folded waffle sandwich.
Grabbing onto that inspiration while it was still piping hot, Mottershaw stopped at a grocery store on the way to work and bought a box of frozen waffles. She tells Businessweek,
Mottershaw figured out that thawing the waffle, folding it, and frying it in the baskets Taco Bell already uses for its Chalupas made it look like a taco shell, and the rest was history as of 9 a.m. that morning. “As soon as the team started to see it, there was this instant excitement, this buzz that this is a cool idea, this is a big idea,” says Mottershaw.
The Waffle Taco apparently changed about 80 times before becoming the new menu item you know and love (although apparently not as much as the A.M. Crunchwrap) today.
