Back in the prehistoric days of pre-Instagram photography, you had to carry around a camera to get that Kodak moment, not just your iPhone. For photographer Youngna Park, those moments came in bountiful bursts when she interned one summer at the famed Chez Panisse in Berkeley, CA. There, days were spent baking beautiful tarts and churning luscious ice creams with then pastry chef Mary Canales, surrounded by impeccable peaches, plums, and figs plucked by forager Alan Tangren. These images were seared into memory, but they never made it onto film

Park’s one regret is neglecting to capture a single shot during her time at Chez Panisse, so she’s been making up for it the past decade. Whether she’s shooting a cast iron-fired feast for Food52 or Instagramming a post-Christmas, carb- and cheese-laden breakfast in Germany, this Brooklyn-based shutterbug is always at the ready. Beautifully lit and popping with geometric patterns, Park’s photos have earned her plenty of fans, as well as frequent appearances in magazines such as Kinfolk and New York.

In each of her 10 favorite photos for First We Feast, Park seems to press pause, letting moments full of movement and wonderful food in the making come to a standstill just before getting gobbled up. From summer’s bounty ready to be pickled, to a partially demolished wedding cake, Park’s photographs reflect her love of good food and eye for composition—so much so that we don’t miss those would-be Chez Panisse pictures one bit.
