Starting from tomorrow, Newark Mayor Cory Booker will live off of food stamps for a week. As part of the SNAP/Food Challenge, the mayor will attempt to keep his spending below the $133.26 per month ($33 a week, or less than $5 per day) allotted to qualifying New Jersey residents.
Booker has already indicated that he will be setting aside his coffee habit, deeming it too expensive. He signed up for the challenge after an exchange with a woman on Twitter. He threw the gauntlet after the 39-year-old mother of two from North Carolina asked, “Why is there a family today that is ‘too poor to afford breakfast’? are they not already receiving food stamps?”
“Let’s you and I try to live on food stamps in New Jersey (high cost of living) and feed a family for a week or month. U game?” Booker responded.
Tweets on the mayor’s tweetfeed reflect a mix of encouragement and criticism. We’ll see how things develop this week.
The SNAP/Food Challenge invites the public to walk a few miles in the shoes of those who look to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for assistance.
