Meet the new hero to lovers of Twinkies, Cupcakes, and Donettes everywhere: Judge Robert Drain. In an eleventh-hour move, the federal judge has convinced Hostess Brands and the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union to meet for mediation today.

In court yesterday to seek liquidation, the 85-year-old brand was prepared to close its doors, finding it unsustainable to operate after a week of the union’s strike. Little did they know that Judge Drain would make an attempt to save 18,000 jobs, not to mention the trouble it’d take folks to bake their own versions of Hostess classics. If all can be resolved, Hostess won’t have to revisit the court on Wednesday to continue its liquidation proceedings.

On the sidelines, companies like Flower Foods and Grupo Bimbo are waiting to see if they’ll have an opportunity to snap up an asset or two should Hostess relinquish ownership.
