The Best Beer Labels of the Week: May 25, 2013

Ogle. Open. Drink. Repeat.

  • Crooked Stave is one of our 25 Breweries to Watch in 2013, for the labels as well as the beer.
  • Ready for summer on the Upper Peninsula.
  • Perennial is making yet another cutting-edge beer, this time with seasonal blackberries, and matching it with yet another great label.
  • I used to run track meets at Northfield Mount Hermon, a prep school in New Hampshire—the thing I remember most is that their bathroom stalls had no doors. Still, I can't resist the nostalgic pull of this new maple syrup-laced ale from Dogfish.
  • The "So Bad, It's Good" award goes to this incredibly dorky pun on the Hanson hit we all love to hate.
  • The bad news is, we're already hearing about fall seasonals and it's not even summer. The good news is, Long Trail got an artist to paint a sweet pumpkin for this label.
  • Hola, Senor Viejo!
  • Jester King: Another brewery to watch this year, for both farmhouse-style suds and awesome art.
  • Is anyone else reminded of The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time? "Working Class Ale" is also a great moniker.
  • This simple, throwback graphic reminds me that Lienenkugel's has heritage that dates back further than the SABMiller takeover.

It’s hard to even look at regular beer labels this week after discovering Beer Labels in Motion, one of the coolest things on the Internet. But we must soldier on and give due props to breweries—like Crooked Stave and Perennial Ales—that are pushing the label-art envelope and delivering brews as fun to look at as they are to drink.

What are you sipping on this weekend? Let us know, and make sure you’ve got a cooler-full of session beers ready for tomorrow’s cookouts.
