Samuel Merritt says: "[This beer from] Rhinegold Brewery in Brooklyn was very influential as it was the first light beer ever, formulated by famed brewing chemist Joseph Owedes with a new method of enzymatic action that resulted in fewer calories (95) and 2.6 grams of carbohydrates. Though not a commercial success, it gave rise to the idea of low-calorie beer. Eventually, in the hands of Miller, light American lager became not only the most popular style of beer, but also [came to comprise] half the volume of consumption. A delicious backlash was to follow, of course."
