Oops, That “Healthy” Antioxidant in Red Wine Might Actually Undo the Benefits of Exercise

Science can be such a tease. Remember a few years ago when everyone told us that a glass of red wine a day keeps the doctor a day? Remember how that glass of wine a day turned into three and we could still say it was good for us? Yeah, turns out that probably wan’t true. Or if it was, it was for rats, not humans.

A study of 27 physically active, 65-year-old men found that resveratrol, the antioxidant found in red grapes and credited with red wine’s alleged superpowers, actually lessened the positive effects of exercise. It’s a small study, of course, and doesn’t include younger men or women, but hearing things like “resveratrol supplementation attenuated the positive effects of training on several parameters including blood pressure, plasma lipid concentrations and maximal oxygen uptake” from one of the study’s authors still feels like a major letdown.

Published in the Journal of Physiology, the study’s narrowly focused enough that there’s no need to put down your corkscrew just yet. But please, for the love of God: if we can’t have red wine, at least leave dark chocolate (the other “healthy” not-so-healthy food) alone.
