A junior employee at a British souvenir company was given the simple job of finding royalty-free images of Manchester United defender Chris Smalling to use on a mug. The incompetent staff member mistook President Obama for Smalling, and printed 2,000 mugs with Obama’s head instead of Smalling’s.

The Daily Mail reports the junior staff member is now facing demotion. What happened to the one-of-a-kind Obama-Smalling mugs? They were handed off to expert clearance resellers Wholesale Clearance UK to try and shift the stock.

Karl Baxter MD for Wholesale Clearance tells Metro UK,

“The Dorset company in question was given the seemingly easy job of sourcing royalty free pictures of each England squad player to use on the England mugs.

They passed this onto to their young, bright eyed and bushy tailed new apprentice. The designs were proofed and signed off by their boss, who had clearly had a heavy night with the lads playing poker and before he’d had his first vat of coffee the following morning.”

Maybe Barack will make a surprise appearance on the field when England plays Coast Rica tomorrow? All we know for certain is the unnamed souvenir company is hiding their heads in shame.

That is hilarious and a little unfortunate for the staff member. Perhaps, it was deliberate.
