The big news among soccer fans in NYC of late has been the reopening of Nevada Smith's, a longtime hub of footie fanaticism that shuttered for nearly a year and a half after being forced from its original location.
It's new, gleaming digs are just a block away, and no doubt the place will be a madhouse for today's Borussia Dortmund versus Real Madrid Champion's League semifinal (kick-off 2:45pm on FX). But that's sort of the problem—because Nevada Smith's has developed a reputation as the place to watch soccer in Manhattan, it can be a nightmare to actually go to, often attracting stifling hordes of "fans," a.k.a. people who love to use international sports as an excuse to booze at antisocial hours. (Full disclosure: I use the fact that my mom's British to be incredibly snobby about football fandom—I need something to give a sense of worth in this world!).
