Orlando-based graphic designer and illustrator Marcelo Rizzetto is single-handedly working to save DC Comics from themselves. Well, maybe not quite, but his Justice League Brewery project could do a lot to win back the hearts and minds of fans after the angry outcry caused by that Ben-Affleck-as-Batman casting debacle.
JLA members represented here are Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, the Green Lantern, and Aquaman—none of whom were available for immediate comment, as they were too busy drinking their sorrows away about that Affleck thing. More importantly, however, we were able to chat with Marcelo about creating this crisp, clean, and refreshing collection. Here’s what he had to say:
What inspired the Justice League Brewery collection?
One day I was watching The Dark Knight and drinking a beer, and it was a dark beer. And voila! The idea came to my head and I thought of making a Batman beer. The other super beers I created later.
If you could have any brewery or breweries in particular brew these beers, who would you choose and why?
I think Dogfish Head because they create the craziest flavors that exist today. It would be perfect!
Can you tell us a little about your creative process for pieces like these?
In this work, the creative process was very easy and instinctive. Beer and superheroes are two universes that I like a lot, and where I have a lot of knowledge. I love to look at beer labels and see how some are more classic and some are more modern. I wanted to combine all the knowledge I had as a child when I read comics, and then as an adult lover of beer.
